New Local Food Magazine

I saw the second issue of the New Orleans-based food magazine Delectable today when I took my son to get some breakfast at Royal Blend's Metairie Road branch. My first thought was that there are a lot of publications focused on the local eating scene, and indeed, just about every locally based rag has a pretty significant food section. Off the top of my head, I can think of New Orleans Culinary Concierge, which comes out quarterly, and a small guide to New Orleans' neighborhood restaurants called, appropriately "New Orleans Neighborhood Restaurant Guide" that I see at a few places around town but which apparently does not have a website.

[Edit: A kind reader has alerted me to a website for New Orleans Neighborhood Restaurant Guide, authored by Kevin Roberts. Link added above. I don't have a copy of the current issue, but I've bought it in the past, and it's a useful guide to local joints; the kind of guidance you don't always get from major publications, though Gambit and Offbeat do a good job as well.]

So why are there so few food websites? I dunno, but Delectable, at least, seems to have a pretty good web presence. Certainly worth checking out. It still doesn't explain why there aren't more people foodblogging here, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time until New Orleans foodblogs are as ubiquitous as blogs about politics. Oh god.

Among the other things I bought at the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning were some baby yellow squash. My Grandmother used to cook squash with just a little butter and onion, but it was fresh from my Grandparent's garden, and it was unbelievably good, like just about everything else she cooked. I generally cook yellow crookneck squash in the same way, but every once in a while I like to branch out. Tonight I did a gratin using the baby squash, fresh thyme, and cream. I took pictures, so I'll save the recipe for another post, but I can at least report that it was really good.

Here's a website for the Neighborhood Restaurant Guide, although it doesn't have much content. Just a place to order a copy, really.
